CPT or Common Proficiency Test is the entry level, i.e. first/lowest level at which a student or applicant can begin pursuing the Chartered Accountancy (professional accounting) course. The duration of the course is as per the regulations of the institution, i.e. the CA CPT course is for 2 months (6 months). The duration of the course is the minimum time that an applicant needs to spend on taking up the course at this level. The period usually starts from the time the student gets registered for the course, to the time he/she completes the course.

After completion of the minimum duration, a student can appear at the first examination which falls immediately. The actual date of registration determines the actual time that a student needs to spend on the course, i.e. from registration to examination. One can assume the course duration to be 6 months, since examinations are conducted for the course only twice a year.
